McCallister's Art Supply was founded by Ken McCallister in 1953. After many years of working for local art supply retailers Dayton Blue Print and Bert L. Daily's, Ken decided the time had come to do his own thing. The original store was a 700 sq. ft. space at 318 Salem Avenue (now part of our McCallisters Education Center).
My father, George Bussinger, left Daily's Art Supply a year later and joined Ken. |
In those early days, empty product boxes were put under the shelves to create an illusion of a larger inventory. During summers and holidays Ken's son, Brooks, worked in the store and when I was old enough I joined in also. |
Over the years we gradually took over all the space in the original building and in 1977 made the decision to move to larger quarters. After much discussion, the decision was made to stay on Salem Avenue and build a new 10,000 sq. ft. building. The move into the new location was completed in October 1977 and we continue to operate here. |
Ken McCallister retired in 1977 and my father retired in 1989. Today the two sons, Brooks and I, own the business that our fathers worked hard to establish.
After 36 years at McCallisters, I still enjoy coming to work every day and look forward to the interaction with our customers who have become friends over the years.
I look forward to seeing you at McCallisters.
George Bussinger
